Position Title: Ubuntu Food Hub Trainee

Position Description

UTwo Ubuntu Food Hub Trainees will support the United African Farm Ubuntu Food Hub project. The trainee role is available for a young person aged between 18-25 years. Working closely with the Ubuntu Food Hub Coordinator, the Hub Trainee will engage with and support United African Farm (UAF) members and the community, enabling community voices and active participation and collaborating with a range of partner organizations to support the delivery of the project outcomes. 

The Ubuntu Food Hub Trainee role will work closely with The Food Hub Coordinator, and constantly liaise with VicHeath, the project funders and Sustain: Australia Food Network, the auspice organization.

 

Key Objective of the Position

The objectives of the Food Hub are to;

  1. Increase access to locally sourced, healthy, culturally appropriate food for more Victorians, particularly those experiencing greater barriers to access. 

  2. Increase opportunities for young people with diverse lived experiences to engage in the food system, advocate for better local food systems and find meaningful employment in the sector. 

  3. Support local food producers and enterprises. 

  4. Increase opportunities for communities to celebrate and showcase their food cultures.

About The Ubuntu Food Hub

Inspired By the Sudanese proverb: “we desire to bequeath two things to our children – the first one is roots; the other one is wings” this project aims to foster a sense of belonging and inclusion amongst participants by training, equipping and upskilling them in agriculture, leadership, career development and business skills. 

Participants will connect to various African cultures, grow culturally appropriate foods, engage in mentorship programs, and ultimately restore their identity through meaningful conversation.

Overview of the training program:

 As part of employment, the Trainee will participate in a formal training program facilitated by VicHealth. This will allow the Trainee to develop knowledge and practical tips to support them to be changemakers in our local area. They will also be part of the Youth Food Network, composed of young people employed in 7 Food Hubs across Victoria. The network will support trainees to become advocates in their local area to transform their local food system. An external organisation will facilitate the Youth Network through regular meetings.

Our Purpose: 

 Main responsibilities:

Trainees must demonstrate a commitment to participate in the formal training program. 

Interest in being an active member of the Youth Food Network, including engagement in meetings and an eagerness to implement the skills learnt through the training to influence change in your local food system. 

 

Trainees will actively participate in a range of Ubuntu  Food Hub activities, including but not limited to 

 

Growing and harvesting food at our urban farm and other community partner farms and gardens. 

 

Selling food at markets and other vendors. 

 

Working with our partners on their food hub initiatives. 

 

Encouraging and supporting young people to participate in the Food Hub’s initiatives. 

 

Working with volunteers on Food Hub initiatives. 

 

Helping to develop case studies, videos, social media content and printed material to promote the Community Food Hub. 

 

Helping to implement and monitor marketing and communications strategies that promote both the Ubuntu Food Hub and UAF’s brand, ensuring the vision, objectives and outcomes of the Food Hub are effectively conveyed. 

 

Availability to work weekend roster, one day a month, at farmers markets, festivals or other Community Hub initiatives.

 

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATION AND SPECIAL CONDITIONS: 

 

An interest and passion for making positive change in the community, specifically in the food systems space.

 

A commitment and willingness to embrace the opportunities provided as part of the traineeship. 

 

A genuine willingness to work and build skills across various activities within the Food Hub.

 

An empathetic, genuine and strengths-based approach when working with individuals and organizations in our community. 

 

Demonstrated time management skills with the ability to work to tight deadlines.

 

Good written, communication and interpersonal skills. 

 

Administration skills with proficiency in the MS Office suite. 

 

Clear Police Check- if offered the role, we can assist with the application process.

 

Current Working with Children Check – if offered the role, we can assist with the application process. 

 

Youth from African backgrounds between 18-25 years old is highly encouraged to apply.
